20-Minute Glittery Glam DIY Christmas Wreath

This year I have decided to do a mixed metal color scheme for my living room Christmas decor and need to do some quick DIY projects to fill out the space. This DIY glam, gold and glittery Christmas wreath is perfect for the occasion and only takes 20 minutes to make.

It’s hard to believe it’s almost Thanksgiving and Christmas is just around the corner!

Like many people, I love to decorate for the holidays but just don’t have much time to spend on it.

Which is why I am often trying to create DIY Christmas decor that looks great but doesn’t take that long to make.

And that’s where the idea for this glittery glam DIY Christmas wreath came from. Even better? It goes together in less than 20 minutes.

Supplies

Materials

I got most of the supplies from Michael’s. They are hard to find online (so I wasn’t able to link them), but if you go into the store, you should be able to get what you want. I provided links for everything that I got elsewhere.

• foam wreath form*. Mine was 14″ across.
• gold ribbon (or whatever color you want to use). I used about 12 feet of ribbon that was 2 1/2″ wide. You could use narrower ribbon if you want…you’ll just need more of it. I wouldn’t use ribbon that was wider because it will be hard to put it on smoothly with the curve.
• evergreen garland. Mine was actually white.
• 2 gold leaf picks
• 1 faux flower. I used a white and gold magnolia flower, but you could use any kind of large flower that goes with your decor. Mine came in a bunch of flowers with plastic stems (they usually cost less per flower this way)…I just pulled the flower off the stem to use it for this wreath.
• pearl and crystal garland
• 4 1/2″ wide diamond ribbon*. You could use narrower diamond ribbon…it will just take more.
• floral pins*

Tools

• wire cutters
• scissors

How To Make The Wreath

1 | Wrap The Foam Wreath With Ribbon

Start with an inexpensive foam wreath form. I actually reuse mine to make new wreaths every year so it’s even less expensive because I don’t have to buy new ones 🙂

Then we’re going to cover all of the foam with ribbon.

Angle the end of the ribbon inside the wreath form.

Use a floral pin to attach the ribbon.

Just push it into the styrofoam and it will hold the end of the ribbon in place.

Then wrap the ribbon around the wreath.  Make sure that the edges overlap so you don’t see any of the white and keep going all the way around until you get to the other end. Make sure that you’re kind of pulling it a little bit tight so you don’t have any loose edges sticking out.

When we get back to the end, use another floral pin to attach the end in place.

And cut off the extra ribbon.

2 | Add The Evergreen Garland

Next we’re going to be putting some of the evergreen garland around the edges of the wreath.

I like using garlands for this kind of thing because they give you lots of flexibility for how long of a piece you can have. And they’re also relatively inexpensive compared to buying the individual picks.

Lay one end of the garland down at the bottom of the reef.

Then position the garland about two thirds of the way up the wreath on one side.

Cut the extra garland off the top.

Do the same for the other side of the wreath, making sure it goes up to the same height.

Now we’re going to attach the evergreen garland to the wreath form.

Overlap the ends at the bottom and then push in a floral pin over the top of them where they cross. Make sure it’s pushed in tight enough to hold those ends in place.

Then use more floral pins to attach the other ends of the evergreen to the wreath. One pin on each end usually works fine, but feel free to use more if you need them to keep the evergreen in the right place. Try to cover the tops of the pins with a few evergreen needles so you can’t see them.

Take a look at your wreath and make sure you like the way the evergreens look. Mine were a little bit too long, so I cut off the top branch to make it a little shorter.

3 | Attach the Floral Arrangement

Now we’re ready to make the floral arrangement at the bottom of the wreath.

Start with the gold leaf picks. If the stems are long, trim them to about an inch with the wire cutters.

Position the leaves at the bottom of the wreath so that the stems cross in the same place where the Evergreen stems are crossing. Don’t attach them yet.

Before attaching the leaves, we’re going to put your flower in the middle of the leaves (so that it covers the crossing stems) and make sure you like how it looks. If you’re not happy with it, re-position the leaves until you like it.

Take the flower off and attach the leaves using floral pins. I use two pins for this (one for each leaf) and position them pretty close to the bottom end of the stem.

Once you’ve got the leaves on, it’s time to add the flower. To do this, put a floral pin around one of the petal stems close to the center of the flower (at the back) and put it into the wreath close to where the leaf stems are crossing.

If you want to keep the wreath really simple, you could actually stop at this point…but I like to add a little bit more 🙂

So I cut 5 or 6 stems off the pearl and crystal garland to use around the flower like berries. The wire snips are better than scissors for cutting this type of garland.

Once you have a few of them cut off, there are a couple of options for how to attach them to the reef.

The first is to pull out an individual wire section, and wrap the wires around a leaf stem.

The second is to use the whole stem and attach it to the wreath using floral pins (like we did with the leaves). Try to make sure the pin is under the flower petals so you can’t see it from the front.

So once again you could stop here if you like the wreath the way it is.

Add The Diamond Ribbon

However I hung some diamond ribbon strips coming down underneath the flower to add a little more interest to the wreath.

To do this, cut a 9″ piece of the diamond ribbon.

Then we’re going to make little ribbon strips by cutting off each individual row of crystals so you have a whole bunch of 9″ long but thin ribbons.

Once the ribbons are cut, thread 4 of the diamond ribbon strips onto 1 floral pin.

There’s a small hole between each of the crystals that is the perfect size for the pin to fit through.

Then pin the ribbons underneath the flower on the bottom of the wreath form.

Thread another 4 ribbon strips on to another pin, and push it in beside the first one.

The idea is to create a row of ribbons that are centered under the flower. So repeat the process until you like how the ribbons look. I used 6 pins.

The very last step is trim off the ribbon at varying lengths. I like the look better when they aren’t all the same…however that’s my taste. If you like the ribbons to all hang evenly, feel free to skip this step.

And that’s all there is to it! All you have left to do is hang it.

Tip: I usually stick another floral pin in the back of the wreath at the top. Then use this to put the wreath on whatever nail or hook it will hang from.
