How To Paint An Accent Table Using Cottage Paint

I like to have small tables or stools near seating, as a convenient place for a book, my glasses or a teacup. Although they are not usually focal points, I had one table that was hand carved wood and stained dark brown. It added nothing visually satisfying to my room, so I decided to paint it using Cottage Paint.

Cottage Paint is a clay based product that can be applied directly to any clean wooden surface. It comes in a wide range of colors and dries smooth and matte. Clean up is, mandatory in my opinion, with soap and water.

All I needed to decide was the color. When I arrived at the paint store with my fabric and room samples*, I deviated from my purpose, which was to create an interesting accent. I made the too common judgement error of going matchy-matchy. I chose the color “Passion Fruit” which perfectly matched the chair fringe, the fireplace tile, the wall-paper, etc. The painted results were more nondescript than the original. This lesson reminded me once again how important it is to honor one’s objective and not second guess one’s instinct, when choosing a color.

You see, initially I thought “Chive” would spice up the table and the room and it does!

What You Will Need To Paint a Table With Cottage Paint

Masking tape or painter’s tape
Cottage paint furniture clean & prep
8 oz. Cottage paint furniture restoring paint
Cottage paint varnish – I used Ralph Lauren faux technique glaze.
Good brush – I used Simms Vintage pro Bristle 1 ½ “
# 10 bristle stencil brush (optional)
2” foam applicator brush

How To Paint The Table With Cottage Paint

1. Tape off any areas where you do not want to apply paint.
2. Spray the table with the ‘Clean & Prep’, wait for a minute and wipe the surface with a dry cloth. Make sure the wood is completely dry before you proceed.
3. Paint the table. Use the stencil brush to pounce paint into the ornate grooves. Let dry for 2 hours, and then give a second coat.
4. When paint is completely dry, brush on the protective varnish with the foam applicator. I used Ralph Lauren faux technique glaze because it gives a satin gloss finish as opposed to the flat finish of Cottage Paint varnish. I applied a second coat of the glaze for more even coverage.
5. Remove tape

*Hint: Keep samples of the upholstery and cushion fabrics, paint chips and wallpaper in a Ziploc bag for easy reference.
