How To Make a Heart Shaped Valentine Cake
First let me say that I am not a talented baker by any stretch of the imagination. So when I say that making a heart shaped Valentine cake is really easy to do, it really is! No need to spend money on (or find storage space for) a special heart shaped cake pan…just re-use some of the pans you probably already own.
Instead of using 2 square or 2 round cake pans (like you normally would for a layer cake), use one 8″ square cake pan* and one 8″ round cake pan*.
You can use a cake mix, or make your own cake from scratch.
For heart-shaped cakes, I like to use Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Icing. The red-colored cake with white icing (or pink icing if you add a couple of drops of red food coloring) is the perfect color scheme. (If you’re looking for a recipe, you can find our Waldorf Astoria red velvet cake HERE and the cream cheese icing recipe HERE.) However, that’s just me 🙂 You can pretty much use any cake and icing recipe that you want.
Make the cake as you normally would (except for the different shaped pans).
When the cake layers have finished cooling, cut the round cake in half.
Turn the square so that one of the corners is pointing towards you. Then match the cut sides of the round cake halves to the flat ends of the square cake that are facing away from you.
And voila…you have a heart shape. Don’t worry if the edges don’t match exactly, you can smooth them out when you put the icing on.
If you want to make sure the pieces stick together, you can put a bit of frosting in between. (I didn’t bother with that step and you couldn’t tell after the cake was frosted).
Add some icing and you can’t tell at all where the joins are!
Then decorate it however you want.
I use the pre-mixed icing that comes in a tube for doing these kinds of decorations (piping bags just never seem to work very well for me). Even using the icing from a tube I wasn’t able to get the outline very even! (evidence that I was telling the truth when I said I’m not a very good baker).
Adding a very short word worked a bit better 🙂
Whether you are making it for Valentine’s Day, an anniversary dinner or some other occasion, your cake will be the center of your table decor!
