DIY Gold Stemmed Wine Glasses

There have been a few occasions in my life (the first being my DIY wedding reception) where I have needed a bunch of wine glasses, didn’t want to spend a lot of money but still wanted an expensive-looking party.

Enter IKEA! They have a few different types of wine glasses that cost less than a dollar each, making them very affordable and often less than a hall would charge to rent them!

With a little bit of spray paint and some extra work, I turned those clear glass wine glasses into the gold-stemmed glasses that I wanted.

Having said all that, this same technique will work on pretty much any type of stemmed glass…so you don’t have to be limited to the IKEA selection.

The Background

I wanted wine glasses that matched these white and gold place settings. Spray painting the stem of the wine glass gold suits this table perfectly…guests didn’t know the glasses only cost 75 cents each!

I used the small IKEA wine glasses (which have since been a perfect size for wine tastings). And because I owned them, and they were so inexpensive, I wasn’t at all worried if they got broken.

The other benefit of painting your own glasses is that you can make them whatever color you need! And if the paint happens to get a scratch in it, it is easy to patch by just adding another layer of spray paint.

How to Paint the Wine Glasses

Use small pieces of tape to cover the bottom of the wine glass
Use small pieces of tape to cover the bottom of the wine glass

1. Use small pieces of painter’s tape to cover the bottom of the wine glass (this will prevent the glass from getting paint on it). Smaller pieces of tape are easier to wrap around the stem, making sure that it doesn’t cover any of the stem.

2. Continue putting on the small pieces of tape until the entire bottom of the glass is covered.
